Artist’s statement:

Only once have been swum inside a bait ball. It happened so fast, one minute I was staring up at a few silver fish caught in the rays of the sun above, the next I was in the centre of a magical spinning vortex of metallic flashes (whiting perhaps, I’m uncertain which species) with the sun glowing at the top of the cylinder of swirling fish. There was a moment of pure chemical rush as the bliss factor took hold of every atom of my being. Then the trusty pre-fontal cortex elbowed my delirium, telling me to quickly look side to side, then down, as a wobbegong swum directly underneath me.

I took the hint and backed away, through the surf and up onto the rocks, scuba gear clanging and banging, reminding me I’m just a guest in this fabulous underwater world.
